Bridging the Infinite

How can a finite human being connect to an infinite G-d? Our Sages address this question by explaining that before the giving of the Torah, the spiritual and physical realms were separate: “The heavens are the heavens of G-d, but the earth He gave to man.” Humanity had no true access to the spiritual, nor could the spiritual penetrate the physical.

At Sinai, this changed. “G-d descended on Mt. Sinai,” making the Divine accessible, and “Moses ascended to G-d,” granting humanity the ability to elevate the world. The giving of the Torah created a lasting channel that enables an ongoing relationship between G-d and man.

The Torah brings the infinite within the grasp of the human mind, for G-d invested His essence within its teachings. When we study Torah, we connect directly with that Divine wisdom. Our Sages note that G-d’s voice at Sinai “had no echo,” symbolizing that the Divine became absorbed into the physical world; from then on, “the Torah is not in heaven,” but woven into earthly existence.

Mitzvos extend this connection into action. The word mitzvah relates to tzavsa—connection—because through mitzvos our thoughts, emotions, and deeds become bound to G-d.

Thus, Sinai is not merely a historical event, but a living reality. This is why we bless G-d daily as “the Giver of the Torah”—in the present tense. And this ongoing revelation will reach its fulfillment in the era of Mashiach, completing the process that began at Sinai.

Shabbat Shalom!
